HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

We have a 1986/87 Certina brochure and price list that feature this watch. The RRP was £325, which would be £938 in today’s money according to this Historic Inflation Calculator.

CONDITION

Titanium is twice as strong as steel, and half the weight – this entire watch on the bracelet weighs 50 grams. The reason that more watches are not made from this super material is the cost of the raw material, and the extra cost of tooling machines to machine titanium. Inside the titanium case is the ETA 955 series movement found in most quality watches of the period. The bracelet has three matt gold plated centre links on either side of the case, but then the bracelet is just titanium and this is a clever move – the links nearer the clasp get rubbed more, so not plating these prevents them from looking worn. The bezel is similar – the gold plating is only on a band near the watch case, and not on the high points that might show wear. The clasp is signed, and sprung, for a comfortable fit all day long. The sapphire crystal is unmarked, and the dial is very good too.
